We would like to thank you for considering or choosing Nahanni Butte Outfitters for your Canadian hunting destination.  The Lancaster family has owned and operated this vast section of the Mackenzie Mts NWT for the past decade.  At Nahanni you'll find Cam and Cathy Lancaster, Jim and Nadine Lancaster and Clay and Kris Lancaster operating this area.
The Area: With 9700 square miles of roadless, untouched wilderness this is a mountain hunters paradise.  This area is so large that in 10 years of operating we have only seen or hunted about 70%.  It is safe to say that many of the animals you will hunt have never seen a human.
Our Hunts:  Our hunters arrive and depart Ft. Simpson Northwest Territories via Yellowknife and Edmonton on their scheduled arrival and departure dates.  We pick you up at the airport and bring you to our base camp in Nahanni Butte.  The trips are 10 day backpack trips including your arrival and departure.  It works out to be 8 days on the mountain.  At Nahanni we use helicopters, airplanes and river boats to transport our clients.  We offer Dall Sheep, Alaska Yukon Moose, Mt. Caribou and Mt Goat with consistently 98% success.
Dall Sheep:  The Nahanni region of the Mackenzie Mts is renown for the high density of sheep.  It's not uncommon to see 20-30 rams in one hunt.  Over the past years, we have maintained a very high age average on the sheep we harvest.  It's consistently 10-11 years and because of these management practices the sheep have benefited .  The numbers remain high and our average sheep size stays around 36-37" with many 39 and 40" plus rams taken each year.  Our rifle hunts are usually 100% successful.  We also take many archery sheep hunters each year.  The Nahanni has produced more pope and young entries for dalls than any other place in North America.  By setting aside key areas for archery hunting as well as the huge numbers of animals, the success on these trips is very good. These trips are mountain backpack trips that require clients to be in the best shape possible.
Alaska Yukon Moose:  Over the past decade the NWT has become world renown for producing some great looking monster moose.  Our average moose is around 60" in spread and scores 210 boone and crokett.  These moose look impressive with long points and great bottoms.  We have taken 107 moose for 111 clients past 10 years with all unsuccessful clients being bow hunters.  With so few moose taken from such a large area, there is a chance at taking a world class trophy.

Mountain Goat & Caribou: We offer both these animals as a secondary bonus or as a primary hunt.  This area is one of the only places in the Mackenzies with a large number of goats.  Many of our clients hunt for goat after they take a sheep or a moose.  The helicopter offers a goat hunt that can be done by hunters of all abilities. We have an incredible number of goat and we harvest 95% Billies with the average age being 10 years old. This is a moderate physical hunt as we hunt on flatter ground with the goats living over the sides of the plateaus.  At Nahanni we wait for the goat to come up to the tops on the flat ground before we harvest them. Every year we take some record book class Mt.Caribou scoring from 360-420.  The Mt.Caribou numbers are great and the trophy potential is always there on each hunt. We took the new #1 SCI at 524 in 2006
Our Guides:  Most of our crew is family or have been with us for a long time.  Most of us hunt 12 months a year and make a living at this.  All are very experienced and considered the best the hunting industry has to offer.  Your guide is often the most important part of having a fun successful trip so we carefully recruit or train our crew.
Weather: Weather can and usually will take days off your hunt, but you will get your animal.  Just relax and wait for better weather.  The temperature ranges in the summer from 15C to -5C (25 to 80 degrees F) and is usually around freezing later in the fall.  It can snow one day and you'll sunburn the next.

At Nahanni we guarantee that we will give our customers 110% effort toward giving them a fun, successful trip.  We have enjoyed a better than 87% return rate on our clients so we must be doing something right.  Whether you are new to hunting or a seasoned hunter, we look forward to hearing from you and taking you on the next hunt of a lifetime.  Thanks again for choosing or considering Nahanni Butte Outfitters.
